Since 1989, Alabama has seen a significant rise in the value of its industrial and construction minerals production (figure). Between 2008 and 2013, Alabama was the fourth- leading overall domestic producer of clay and shale, common clay, and kaolin, and the fourteenth-leading overall domestic producer of crushed stone and aggregate. Alabama has also remained a major producer of other industrial resources, including bauxite, cement, chalk, gemstones, dimension stone, iron oxide pigment, lime, marble, mica, salt, sand and gravel, and sulfur. In 2014, Alabama’s nonfuel industrial minerals production was valued at $1.24 billion
